“LEGION” | By: Yujung Suh

A short loop-intended track inspired by a line from the TV Show 'LEGION'

“Tell me David, what did the stars say?”

A white-noise, lullaby-esque track meant to remind one of the stars, and meant to clash yet come together as one piece of music like the mind of David Haller. My first track made using NI Maschine. Looking back, it is very bass-heavy, but I still enjoy it and keep it as a marker of my progress.

“RANGE” | Composed by: Yujung Suh | Performed by: Erika Tazawa

My first full composition, completed for my sophomore composition course. ‘RANGE’ is a minimalist piece for piano that explores the space of sound both in terms of space between pitches and space between the sounds we hear as a single note resonates within an area. Reflective of my own start with composition, this piece tests the waters of fluidity while moving between a wide range.

‘RANGE’ was created with the idea of exploring the range of the piano’s register while maintaining a fluid motion and the exploration of “openness” with simplicity. How far can two voices be stretched — how different — until the listener deems it “too different” to listen to? Taken with a G minor triad as a guiding base and established “limit.”

“ATMOS” | By: Yujung Suh

Atmos is a version of LEGION, made with the same inspiration from the stars. I wanted to capture the feeling of being in space, surrounded by stars and so many new things while also keeping in mind the idea of complete silence. How unnerving that would be. While some may find this track a bit unnerving itself, I find this track to be soothing.

“STAGES OF” | Composed by: Yujung Suh | Performed by: Emory Affiliate Artists | Video by: Yujung Suh

‘Stages of’ explores the progression of anger within an argument between two intimate voices. This piece started out with a study of Ares, the god of War, and modern depictions of both the god and his domain. From War, I began to think about the rising tensions I felt around me, and the anger. Anger is an emotion with a negative connotation, one we are told to suppress, but I learned that "pure" anger used properly can be immensely progressive. The unfamiliarity of the emotion to my personally made me more interested in how the different ways anger can be manifested, and through this composition I hope to express the complexity of anger and how it is not "just" something negative. I chose the viola and the cello for their deep and rich timbre and their wide overlapping ranges.

“First Date: The Musical” | Production by: Ad Hoc at Emory University | Sound Design & Mixing by: Yujung Suh

“First Date: The Musical” was shot and produced remotely, with the actors rehearsing via Zoom and shooting on their personal devices. Taking audio files recorded using Audio-Technica USB condenser microphones, I mixed individual vocal tracks with the instrumental track for each musical number using Pro Tools.
